Where Can I Go

Where can I go from your spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
Where can I go from your spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there
If I make my bed in the depths you are there
If I rise on the wings of the dawn
If I settle on the far side of the sea
Even there your hand will guide me
Even there your hand will guide me
You have searched me
And you know me
All my thoughts you know completely
You hem me in, Lord
Behind, before me
REFLECTION
I remember reading Psalm 139 for the first time as a teenager, curled up in the glow of of the twinkle lights draped above my twin bed. Something in my soul expanded. I felt cradled and seen by God’s presence, by his spirit. It’s been my favorite Psalm ever since, and I’m not alone in this favoritism.
Writing “Where Can I Go” was an attempt to capture the soothing embrace this psalm still brings on the rereading, all these years later. I sing it to my children after good days and hard ones, and I expect its warmth to hem me in, behind and before, all the days of my life.
