Learning to Trust

If only I had wings like a dove
I would fly away and find rest
How far away I would flee
I would stay in the wilderness
I would stay in the wilderness

When my heart is shaking with fear
I will fly to the Lord and find peace
He shelters me close to his heart
Like a mother bird folding her wings
Like a mother bird folding her wings

I’m learning to trust my God
I’m learning to trust my God
No matter what

I once kept my eyes to the ground
Now I fly to the Lord and find hope
I hear him and follow the sound
He is with me wherever I go
He is with me wherever I go

I trust in his care
I won’t be ensnared by the fowler’s design
I fly with the wind
That carries me into the joy that is mine

REFLECTION

David penned the words of Psalm 55 in a moment of overwhelm.

If only I had wings like a dove!
I would fly away and find rest.
How far away I would flee;
I would stay in the wilderness.

We’ve all experienced the desperate longing to fly away from our troubles, escape chaos and find a place of refuge. We ache for sanctuary.

Perhaps you too struggle to look toward the future with the assurance that you’ll be alright throughout the storms of life. Perhaps you too struggle to trust that no matter what, you’ll still have access to joy and peace. We trust in God, but we’ve not learned to trust him fully yet.

There is comfort in our learning. I may not have reached completion, but I have a trajectory of growing resilience, and a testimony of the faithfulness of God thus far. With each new heartbreak, I become more intimately acquainted with the warm shadow that awaits me under his wing.
